Emulex
acquired Vixel ...
Expands Reach as FC Component Supplier
IDC Oct. 2003
|
|
This IDC Flash provides insight on Emulex's
announced plans to acquire Vixel, a manufacturer of embedded FC switch technology. It also discusses the
implications of this acquisition for the FC component market.
S I T U A T I O N O V E R V I E W
On October 8, 2003, Emulex announced its
intent to acquire Vixel, a supplier of embedded switch ASICs and subsystems for the storage networking
market. Under the terms of the agreement, Emulex will acquire Vixel for a transaction value of approximately
$310 million and expects to close on the acquisition in November.
Emulex is the leading provider of FC host
bus adapters (the cards used to connect servers, tape systems and some storage arrays to FC networks) with
46.7% market share in 2002, however, the company faces continued pressure from its main
competitor, Qlogic (30.8% HBA market share). Combined, Emulex and Qlogic) now control over 75% of the overall
FC HBA market and along with JNI (recently purchased by AMCC) account for virtually all of the
independent HBA market.
Vixel recently made the transition from FC
SAN switch supplier to OEMs to a subsystem and chipset vendor. Along with Qlogic, Vixel is a champion of
single chip FC solutions that serve as components within new FC based storage array architectures (e.g., the HP
EVA that uses Vixel components) and emerging blade server architectures). Most disk array OEMs use
port bypass controller (PBC) chips from Vitesse, Agilent and PMC -Sierra to create the loop interface between
FC HDDs. Today, more OEMs are searching for ways to offer embedded switching in their disk array
designs to improve overall latency performance (i.e. dedicated pathways to each FC HDD), increase problem
isolation (i.e. quickly identify and swap out a failed FC HDD) and advanced monitoring (proactively
predict faults in the future).
Vixel's InSpeed embedded storage switching
addresses this demand and employs as an internal interconnect solution in storage products from companies
such as BlueArc, Fujitsu, HP, Network Appliance, and Xyratex. The company also notes design wins for
storage products not yet announced by OEMs.
